THE FUNK HUNTERS

THE FUNK HUNTERS

City Series Mix Volume 54

Borrowing inspiration from classic funk and hip-hop, The Funk Hunters are putting the soul back into electronic dance music. Having honed their craft over 450 performances in 16 countries, the DJ duo's show is a brilliant technical display of creative collaboration between 4 turntables. But words can't do justice to two friends whose passion is dance floor mastery – breathless audiences at global festivals including Wakarusa, Burning Man, Rhythm & Vines, Shambhala, Electric Forest, and Envision are the ultimate testament.

The Funk Hunters' reverence for the roots of dance has also lead them into unique live collaborations, sometimes drawing on a cast of supporting musicians to add dimension to their signature sound. Most recently they toured North America with iconic rapper Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, who has called them "the selectah's of the century!"

Based in Vancouver BC, Nick Middleton and Duncan Smith define the west coast bass sound and elevate it with their stunning custom-curated visuals and animated stage presence. Spend an evening with this charismatic duo and you'll see that the band's lifestyle is as relaxed as the west coast, but their sound is global and booming.

Westwood Recordings

Westwood Recordings is The Funk Hunters' own record label. Home to their portfolio of remix projects including Dub FX, Opiuo, and Chali 2na, the label serves Canada's thriving west coast electronic music culture.

If you could collaborate musically with anyone of your choice, who would you choose?

We always answer these questions with an epic funk-inspired music idol from the 60s or 70s, so lets tackle this differently. If I could have anyone in the studio right now, I think it would be Max Martin.

What is your favorite venue you've ever performed at?

Based on sheer epicness of venue I have to go with Red Rocks in Colorado. It’s outdoors and incredibly beautiful. Being a natural amphitheatre the acoustics are amazing, plus it’s in Colorado so the crowd and vibe are top notch.

What DJ gear and travel essentials do you always carry with you while on the road?

Lexdray bag crammed full with Serato records, needles and headphones. A laptop loaded with Ableton and all the production necessities plus UAD Satellite Cards so we can work anywhere. A moleskin notebook for collecting ideas and notes on the go.
